Creative Hands Gallery

Susan Kommit

"I explore various themes in my work, switching between sculptural and more functional forms, wheel-throwing and hand-building.  More recently, surfaces of the vessel serve as exploration of painterly expanses of colors and mark making, using underglazes and underglaze pencil and original hand-drawn transfers.  Exteriors are unglazed, polished and sealed with a non-toxic wax.

Imperfections intentionally accompany my pieces. Whether it is a play between an elegant, thrown vessel form with an expressive, unpretentious surface or an intentionally altered or asymmetrical form. Both reflect the lovely imbalance found in our natural environments.  Asian and Scandinavian aesthetics and ceramics are influential and often explored resources in the creation of my work."
